Hutchinson Scorpion MTB Grips
Hutchinson Scorpion Grips
A pair of Hutchinson Scorpion Grips showed up in the test bin recently. Their
distinctive shape and beefy end cap caught my attention. After months of
riding the trails, I have learned those two details were just the tip of the feature
iceberg.
These grips start with a base of hard
rubber compound that gives the grips
their distinctive ergonomic shape,
extends the durability , and keeps them
securely stuck to the bar. The outer
layer of the grip is a softer compound
that mutes small trail/tire vibration, and
gives ample cushion to keep your hands
comfy on those longer rides. This layer
is embellished with the Scorpion logo
and raised bands of soft but durable
rubber that maximizes grip and control
in any conditions. The whole thing is
topped off with a beefy end cap that
protects your grip and handle bar and
helps keep the grip securely in place.
These end caps do their job! In the year
or so that I have ridden with these grips,
the ends have taken a beating. They
are marred and no longer legible, but
are structurally unscathed and holding
solid.
As far as performance on the trail, these grips give you a sense of precise
control. The dual compounds strike a perfect balance of cushion and rigidity.
They are probably best suited for riders with medium to large hands, and would
could cause issues with a grip this size, and may negate the benefits of the
grip's ergonomic shape. I hold the opinion that mountain biking apparel and
contact points (saddles, pedals/shoes, and grips) are perfectly done when you
don't think about them at all during your ride. That is the case with these grips.
The only sensation you'll remember from these grips is the solid union with your
bike that they afford.
Considering the softness of the outer layer, durability was an initial concern
when I installed the Scorpions, however, in the category of durability, these grips
score a ten! I have ridden a year now at about four rides per week, plus a full
race season, and the grips are really just getting broken in. They are fully intact
and still securely bonded - no tearing, no peeling, no shredding. These grips
will not disappoint!
